How to Get Started
The Consultation
Before the blending of oils, the alleviating of symptoms, or the therapeutic aromatherapy massage comes the most important step of the healing process, critical to achieving successful and beneficial results. The initial consultation with an aromatherapist is a time of sharing, learning, self-discovery, and open communication that provides the information necessary for the aromatherapist to develop a unique and proper care plan for the client.
An aromatherapy assessment begins with the client filling out a detailed form covering the client’s holistic health history, conditions, reasons for seeking aromatherapy, application preferences, and other information. This information can be provided prior to the actual consultation with the aromatherapist. The client meets with the aromatherapist to review the information; this consultation can be conducted on the phone for returning clients but is not recommended for first-time clients. The consultation lasts about 20–30 minutes, but may last slightly longer if the information form is completed during the consultation. Following the consultation, the aromatherapist creates a unique blend and product to address the client’s needs and/or intentions such as to relieve stress, eczema or aches and pains. Products could in the form of massage or oils, balms, creams, inhalers, etc.
Blends and products are designed to take into account the client’s needs, his/her preferred method of application, the therapeutic attributes of both the essential oils and carriers, and the best method of delivery for the specific product.
